Joan Cynthia Obituar, In Loving Memory Of Joan Cynthia

Joan Cynthia Obituar, Death – On August 27, 2023, Joan Cynthia Wiik (Schmitz), age 83, of Mendota Heights, Minnesota, died away in a calm and serene manner surrounded by her family. Joan was a beloved wife, mother, and grandmother in addition to being a devoted member of the Catholic faith. She obtained her license to practice cosmetology, graduated from OLP High School, and was the owner of Joan’s Beauty Salon in St. Paul. Joan, together with her sisters MaryAnn and Jane,

performed as a singing trio known as the Schmitz Sisters. The trio was a fan favorite when they performed at the Flame Room in the Twin Cities. They were a regular act on the variety show that Cedric Adams took on the road. They went on to perform on a national platform, which included the Arthur Godfrey Show, Guy Lombardo at the Desert Inn, and playing with Al Hirt at the Palmer House in Chicago, amongst other notable appearances.

Joan was also a member of the choir of the St. Louis King of France Church in St. Paul for a significant amount of time. Not only did she enjoy singing, but she also enjoyed tending to her garden and spending time with her family. Joan was widely loved by many people, and she will be missed very, very much. Both of Joan’s parents, Clement and Annette Schmitz, as well as her sister MaryAnn Schmitz Maehren, passed away before she was born.

She is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 49 years Alf Wiik; daughter Ann (Jacob) Carlson; sons John (Lori) Wiik, Paul (Jennifer) Wiik, Joseph Wiik; grandchildren Claire, Helena, Maddie, Grace, Gabby, Annabel, James, Julia, Lily, Henry; brother Jim (Rosie) Schmitz, twin sister Jane Weidner, sister Liz (Kirk) Dahlstrom; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. On Wednesday, August 30, from 4 to 7 o’clock in the evening, there will be a visitation held at O’Halloran & Murphy in Woodbury (8700 Valley Creek Rd.).

On Thursday, August 31, at 11 o’clock in the morning, there will be a Mass of Christian Burial held at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Mendota (1405 Sibley Memorial Hwy). A visitation will start an hour earlier, at 9am, on the day of the funeral. Donations in lieu of flowers are preferred to be made to the Guiding Star Wakota (1201 S. Robert St. #14A, WSP, MN 55118) or the Seraphic Mass Association (5217 Butler St. Ste. 100, Pittsburgh, PA 15201).
