Joan Harriet Obituary, Death – Joan Harriet Gebe Cox, aged 89, a cherished resident of Hendersonville, NC, passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 24, 2023, in the comfort of her own home, surrounded by her adoring family. Joan, born on January 5, 1934, in Henderson Co., NC, was the beloved daughter of the late Jack S. Gebe and Ada Mae Rogers Gebe. A stalwart member of Fruitland United Methodist Church, Joan held the esteemed position of being its oldest member. Her dedication to faith was a guiding light in her life. Prior to her retirement, Joan devoted 20 years to educating young minds as an elementary school teacher at Edneyville Elementary School.
Beyond her professional achievements, Joan’s role as a loving and devoted wife, mother, and grandmother stood as a testament to her remarkable character. Her culinary talents were a source of joy for her family and friends, as she delighted in cooking and sharing meals. A lover of nature, Joan possessed a green thumb and found solace in nurturing her garden’s vibrant flowers. Her gentle nature seemed to effortlessly attract animals, showcasing her deep affinity for all living creatures.
In conversations, Joan was a beacon of wisdom, offering trustworthy advice and the right answers. Her affable nature and genuine interest in people fostered countless friendships. She also served as the secretary of the Apple Country Tractor Club, where her organizational skills and warm demeanor left an indelible mark. In addition to her parents, Joan was preceded in death by her son, Alton Luther Cox; daughter, Linda Harriet Cox; grandson, Michael Evan Cox; and brother, Jackie Gebe.
Left to cherish her memory is her devoted husband of 69 years, Luther Cox, who stood as her steadfast partner through life’s journey. She is also survived by her son, James Tyler Cox, and his wife Pamela of Marion, NC; two grandsons, Randall Edward Cox and Daniel Lee Cox, both residing in Hendersonville, NC; granddaughter, Christy Gail Griffin, and her husband David of Bat Cave, NC; great-grandsons, Ryan Skeens of Bat Cave, NC, and Cameron Lee Cox of Saluda, NC; sisters, Anna Stevens of Hendersonville, NC, and Mary Ada Trail of Maryland.
A Graveside Service to honor Joan’s life will be announced in due course. The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the Four Seasons Hospice nurses and staff for their exceptional care. Their unwavering support was a true blessing during this time. The Cox family has entrusted the arrangements to Penland Family Funeral Home, a responsibility they bear with honor. Joan’s legacy of love and light will forever be etched in the hearts of those who had the privilege to know her.
