It is with heavy hearts and fond remembrance that we announce the passing of Peter M. Balet, a pillar of the Malta community and a man whose indomitable spirit left an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing him. Peter, aged 83, departed from us on August 27th, 2023, in a manner that reflected the very essence of his being – with his boots on and driving his beloved tractor.

Born on [Birthdate], Peter grew up in Malta, NY, where he attended Ballston Spa High School and developed a deep-rooted connection to the land and its people. His journey through life was a tapestry woven with diverse experiences, each reflecting his unwavering dedication to hard work and community service. He joined the Malta Ridge Fire Department, served in the US Army, managed a milk delivery route, drove trucks, and contributed his efforts to various capacities, all of which demonstrated his tireless commitment to making a difference.

For 17 years, Peter held the esteemed position of the Town of Malta Highway Superintendent, a role he fulfilled with passion and integrity. His dedication to public service was evident in the nine unopposed elections he won, a testament to the trust and respect he garnered from his fellow townspeople.

Beyond his professional endeavors, Peter was an embodiment of the values he held dear. He possessed an insatiable love for the outdoors, finding solace and purpose in the beauty of nature. His hands were calloused from years of hard work, yet they were equally skilled in woodworking, a craft he pursued with joy. He was a mentor, a friend, and a guiding light for those fortunate enough to cross his path. With his warm heart and unwavering generosity, he embraced his role as a steward of his hometown, always ready to extend a helping hand or a kind word.

Peter’s legacy was defined by his devotion to family. His 57-year marriage to Marie Peck Balet was a beacon of love and partnership. Their union bore the fruits of two children, John Balet and Suzanne Balet-Haight, who, along with their spouses and children, carry forward the torch of his values and spirit.

As we bid farewell to this remarkable man, we invite all who knew him to celebrate his life and honor his memory. Calling hours will be held on Thursday, August 31, 2023, from 4-7 pm, at the Flower & Arts Barn at Balet Flowers & Design, 5065 Nelson Avenue Ext, Malta, NY. A private family burial service will take place on Friday, September 1, 2023, at 11 am, at the Malta Ridge Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to organizations close to Peter’s heart: the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, the Adirondack Institute, or the American Cancer Society. These causes were a reflection of his passions and his desire to make the world a better place. Peter M. Balet leaves behind a legacy of hard work, community, and love that will forever echo through the hills and valleys of Malta and beyond. May his soul find eternal peace as his memory lives on in the hearts of all who knew him.
