Private Donnell Obituary, Death – It is with heavy hearts and profound sorrow that we announce the passing of Private Craig O’Donnell, who, at the young age of 24, made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. Private O’Donnell, a valiant soldier serving with B Company of The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, 5th Battalion the Royal Regiment of Scotland, lost his life on the 4th of September 2006 in a suicide bomb attack while stationed in Kabul, Afghanistan.
Born in Clydebank, Dunbartonshire, Private Craig O’Donnell embarked on his military journey when he joined The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders in 2004. His dedication and unwavering commitment led him to serve in Bosnia in 2005 and Kenya in 2006, experiences that shaped him into the exemplary soldier he became. In July of the same year, he was deployed to Afghanistan as part of the force protection element in Kabul, where he gave his all for his country.
Private O’Donnell was a shining example of a young man who embodied the values of honor, courage, and selflessness. Commanding Officer Lt Col Simon West described him as “a very positive young man, well liked by all his peers and with a very bright future ahead of him. He stood for all the right things in life and was a dedicated and professional Argyll soldier.”
In addition to his commitment to his country, Private Craig O’Donnell had a zest for life that was infectious. An ardent fan of Celtic Football Club and the rock band Queen, he embraced each moment with a cheerful and happy-go-lucky spirit. Always putting others before himself, he was known for his kindness and generosity.
He looked forward to a promising future, eagerly anticipating moving into married quarters with his beloved girlfriend, Jessica, and the upcoming birth of their first child this Christmas. Craig’s childhood dream of joining the regular Army had come true, and he wore his uniform with pride. His family, including his parents, Robert and Lorraine, and his younger sister Claire, looked up to him with immense pride and affection.
In the midst of our indescribable grief, we find solace in the knowledge that Craig O’Donnell gave his life while serving his beloved country. He will forever be remembered by all who knew him as a dedicated soldier, a loving son, a cherished friend, and a beacon of light in our lives.
